STEPHEN S. OSWALD
A distinguished businessman, Oswald is currently the Vice President and Program Manager for Boeing Space Operations in Houston, Texas. A former naval officer and NASA Astronaut, Oswald speaks on topics including safety, teamwork and motivation.

Oswald was born in Seattle, Washington, but considers Bellingham, Washington to be his home. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1969, and upon graduation enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in
1973 as an Aerospace Engineer. In 1974, Oswald was designated a naval aviator and following training in the A-7 aircraft, he flew aboard the USS Midway for two years. In 1978, he attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River and upon this graduation, remained at the Naval Air Test Center to conduct flying qualities, performance and propulsion flight tests on the A-7 and F/A-18 aircraft. Oswald resigned from active Naval duty in 1983, but currently remains an active Naval Reserve Captain.

Oswald joined NASA in November 1984 as an aerospace engineer and instructor pilot and was selected as an astronaut in 1985. He piloted two missions aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. STS-42 was the first International Microgravity Laboratory mission, and STS-56 was the second Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science mission. Oswald then commanded STS-67. This mission established a mission duration record for the Space Shuttle at 17 days.

After completing his last mission, Oswald was assigned to NASA Headquarters as Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Operations. He held this position for two and half years before returning to the Astronaut Office, where he retired from NASA in January of 2000.
