STEPHEN S. OSWALD Oswald was born in Seattle, Washington, but considers
Bellingham, Washington to be his home. He graduated from Bellingham High
School in 1969, and upon graduation enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy
where he graduated in Oswald joined NASA in November 1984 as an aerospace engineer and instructor pilot and was selected as an astronaut in 1985. He piloted two missions aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. STS-42 was the first International Microgravity Laboratory mission, and STS-56 was the second Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science mission. Oswald then commanded STS-67. This mission established a mission duration record for the Space Shuttle at 17 days. After completing his last mission, Oswald was assigned to NASA Headquarters as Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Operations. He held this position for two and half years before returning to the Astronaut Office, where he retired from NASA in January of 2000.
